Start-Up Financing 2026: How Much Start-Up Capital Do You Really Need for Success?

Do you have a vision, a finished product or a service that is ready to conquer the market? Fantastic! But almost every founder, sooner or later, faces the same crucial hurdle: Where will the necessary funding come from? Whether for hiring staff, building your first inventory, or targeted marketing – without the right start-up capital even the best idea remains just a theory.

Gastronomy, retail or coaching: What does it cost to get started?

The costs of your start-up depend heavily on your sector. For example, if you are starting in gastronomy, a small snack bar with a partial kitchen often requires a budget of around €30,000. However, if you want a full kitchen, modern seating, and a professional external appearance, you can quickly reach €200,000.

The situation is similar in e-commerce: A simple Shopify store can be set up with €20,000 for the initial inventory. However, if you want to develop your own product, import containers from overseas, and build a genuine brand, you should budget between €100,000 and €200,000. Service providers and coaches often have it easier and can start with microloans from the regional development banks, successfully starting with amounts between €10,000 and €50,000.

Government funding programmes: State funding as a springboard

Many founders are not aware of how many subsidised resources they are entitled to. The best-known instrument is the KfW StartGeld, which finances projects up to €200,000. But that’s just the beginning. Depending on the federal state and level of innovation (for example, for MVP development or a production line), there are regional programmes that enable local funding of up to €3 million.

For truly large-scale projects, subsidised funding loans of up to €25 million are even available. What is important here: You need to know which programme suits your current stage. Whether it’s a research grant or a classic start-up loan – the selection is extensive, but access requires excellent preparation of your documents.

The ‘box-ticker’ at the bank: Why your business plan is the deciding factor

You need to understand how banks operate. The first person to review your documents is often a ‘box-ticker’. This person does not assess your vision, but checks for completeness and formal accuracy. If your Business Plan is incomplete or the Financial Plan is inconsistent, your application will be rejected before it is even read in detail.

A bank-ready business plan must convince not only you, but also the analytical decision-maker at the bank. It must demonstrate that your project is viable and that you understand the market risks. Only when reading it is ‘enjoyable’ and all appendices are complete do you have a chance of receiving your funds. At X-Group, we have over 20 years of experience in overcoming exactly this hurdle, with a success rate of up to 100%.

Overcoming the equity hurdle: Your path to a 100% success rate

A common mistake is believing you can move millions without a cent of your own equity. We recommend an equity ratio of 10% to 20%. This signals to the bank that you believe in your project and are prepared to take on some risk yourself. But don’t worry: If you have too little savings, there are special equity-replacing programmes that we can access together with you.

The combination of a viable idea, the right amount of equity, and professional support is the safest route to success. We review not only loans for you, but also non-repayable grants, especially in the field of research and development. Use our expertise to finally get your project on the road.
