The science of business plans: 3 parts, 90% success rate – How to convince banks & authorities
Original article: 2018-04-25. English translation. Programme details reflect the original publication date.
As your specialist for start-up, financing and business development and lecturer at the IHK Berlin, I will show you today the method with which our clients achieve a success rate of over 90% with banks. The key lies in the right structure, choosing the recipient and uncompromising completeness.
The recipient decides: Your business plan as a tailored suit
The biggest mistake most founders make is assuming that a business plan serves all purposes. This is incorrect! The business plan must be a tailored suit that is precisely fitted to the recipient recipient:
- Bank/Investor: Requires a loan applicationformat with a focus on repayment ability, collateral and liquidity planning.
- Employment Agency (start-up grant): The plan must be calculated so conservatively for the first six months that the private business start-up still requires support.
- Jobcentre (Einstiegsgeld/LES): Focus on regaining viability and the necessity of investments.
- Landlord/Partner: Focus on location, concept and your personal suitability.
Remember: A plan optimised for the bank is often rejected by the Jobcentre, as it does not show a need for private funding support. Sometimes two or three versions are necessary.
Most important: The completeness of your documents
No matter who you are writing for – the reviewer is initially a box-ticker. If even one document is missing, your application will be returned, you will lose valuable weeks and risk rejection.
The principle of completeness is paramount. For our clients, we use a one- to two-page checklist to ensure that all required documents are included. In addition to the plan itself, this also includes application forms, self-disclosures, declarations of non-objection and Schufa credit reports. Your goal must be to positively surprise the reader by submitting a flawless application.
The business plan in three essential parts
A successful business plan is divided into the following three inseparable areas of funding expertise:
Part 1: The Financial Section (The Hard Core)
If this section does not convince, you can forget about the rest. Here, your entire Business Model is presented in figures – for at least 36 months:
- Costs: Investment costs, working capital, private living expenses (entrepreneur’s salary), variable and fixed costs.
- Revenue & Sales: Your detailed revenue forecast and capacity utilisation projection.
- Tables: Profitability plan (profit and loss), liquidity plan and capital requirements calculation.
Part 2: The Narrative Section (The Why and Who)
This text section (max. 20-30 pages) explains and substantiates the figures from the first section. Here you define:
- Yourself & the team: Your industry experience and professional suitability (see appendix).
- The business model: Product, service, location, legal form.
- The market: Target group, market analysis, competitors and your competitive advantage.
- Marketing: Your detailed market entry plan and personnel plan.
Part 3: The Appendix (The Evidence)
The appendix serves as “evidence” and should contain as much as possible to keep the text section concise. Here, include your CV, certificates, contracts (rental/company agreements), clearance certificates, product descriptions and all necessary application forms. This is where you prove that what you claim in the text corresponds to reality.
