The Start-up Grant (Gründungszuschuss) is, for many who are starting a business from unemployment, the most important Funding for business start-up. It offers you up to 15 months of financial security. However, the devil is in the detail: Applying too early or incorrect communication with the Employment Agency can lead to immediate rejection.
As X-Group, we are experts in Start-up Financing and successfully guide numerous clients through this process every year. Today we will share with you the exact roadmap, the biggest mistakes, and how you can secure this Funding for yourself.
The basic requirements: ALG I and remaining entitlement
To apply for the start-up grant (Gründungszuschuss), you must first be entitled to unemployment benefit I (ALG I) and have at least 150 days (five months) of remaining entitlement ahead of you. The application must be before your actual finalise your start-up? is submitted.
Approval is granted in two phases:
- Phase 1 (6 months): You continue to receive your previous ALG I, plus €300 per month for your social security contributions.
- Phase 2 (9 months): After the six months, you can apply for an extension of nine months, during which you continue to receive the €300 for social security contributions .
This financial basis is crucial for implementing your Business Plan without fear for your livelihood.
The cardinal mistake: Starting too early and availability
This is the biggest trap: Never ever register as a founder or self-employed person as long as you do not have a confirmed ALG I notice in hand. As soon as you inform your advisor that you have already registered a business, you are no longer available for the primary labour market – this leads to the immediate cancellation of both ALG I and the start-up grant.
The golden rule: First, obtain your ALG I notice. Then cooperate with the employment office for one to two months, demonstrate your efforts to find employment (applications, rejections). Only when it is clearly difficult to place you should the caseworker hand you the application documents for the start-up grant.
The requirements package: Business plan and expert opinion
The application is only as strong as the documents submitted. The heart of the application is your Business Plan. It must convince the employment office that your business will be viable . This means: By the seventh month at the latest, your business must generate a surplus that secures your entrepreneur’s salary livelihood.
This includes:
- A detailed set of figures (financial plan) covering 36 months, which demonstrates viability after 6 months.
- A text section (approx. 20–30 pages), which explains your Business Model, your qualification (CV, certificates) and your market.
- The Expert Opinion (FaKu): An external assessment (e.g. from us, the X-Group), which reviews your plan and confirms its feasibility. Although this involves a small fee, it significantly increases the likelihood of approval.
Strategic planning: part-time vs. full-time self-employment
Before you apply for the start-up grant (Gründungszuschuss), you may work in part-time self-employment (less than 15 hours per week). This allows you to test your business concept.
Please note: In part-time self-employment, only €165 profit (not turnover!) is exempt from deduction. If you exceed this limit, the amount will be deducted from your ALG I (German unemployment benefit). An exception applies if you have already exceeded this amount in the past 12 months – in this case, the average earnings will be used. Once the start-up grant is approved, however, you can earn without limit, without your benefits being reduced.
Security in two steps: extension and worst-case scenario
Don’t forget to Part 2 (the extension) of the start-up grant in good time. Here too, you must provide up-to-date figures and a new plan to demonstrate what you have achieved in the first six months and your outlook for the coming months. This secures you a further 9 months at €300 per month for your health insurance.
And even if your Start-up Financing does not immediately lead to full viability results: In the worst case, after 15 months you are entitled to ALG II (Jobcenter, SGB II), where you can continue to apply for subsidies for rent and Investment costs other costs. In Germany, you are therefore never without social security.
