⚖️ KfW StartGeld vs. Investor: How to receive €200,000 and retain 100% control!

You are about to start your business or are new to the market and urgently need capital, perhaps the full 200.000 €? This is the most critical phase of your business. There are two main ways to finance your project: a subsidised loan such as the KfW StartGeld or bringing in investors. But which option is best for you as a founder?

I, Daniel Schäfer from X-Group, have supported thousands of entrepreneurs on this path over more than 25 years. The decision between debt (KfW) and equity (investor) is not just a question of money, but also of entrepreneurial freedom. Let us look at the advantages and disadvantages in detail and find out how you can Start-up Financing optimally structure your financing.

The best route for founders: Advantages of KfW StartGeld

The biggest advantage of the KfW StartGeld lies in the name: you keep your equity capital. If you successfully repay the loan, your business remains 100% yours. You do not have to give up any shares and there is no one on board who can co-determine, vote against you, or ask you uncomfortable questions at 7 a.m. on a Monday. You are your own boss!

Another major advantage for young businesses is the approval hurdle. Normal commercial banks usually require three positive annual financial statements. Thanks to refinancing from European funds and the 80% guarantee provided by KfW to your local bank, you can access this Fundingprogramme as a new or young entrepreneur in the first place. It also offers you repayment-free start-up years and a subsidised interest rate – real advantages that give you time to build your business.

The risk of investor capital

Investors often bring more than just money (networks, expertise), but they almost always require a share of your “property” – your business.

No matter whether you give up 25% immediately or convert shares after a few years via a convertible loan: you give up control. This means:

  • Co-determination: Investors have rights of access and vote at the shareholders’ meeting.

  • Strategy: You have a partner who can block certain decisions (e.g. major investments).

  • Exit strategy: The investor wants to see a return, which may not always align with your long-term goals.

The prerequisite: Your bank-ready financials

Whether KfW or investor – both require a convincing outlook for the future. You need much more than just a business idea; you need robust documentation.

The application stands or falls with the quality of your Business Plan and the associated financial figures. These documents must reflect your forecast for at least three years: from revenue and costs to taxes, interest, and repayment. The bank needs to see that your business model is viable and that you can safely repay the loan. There are also checklists and appendices. If you also want to apply for the start-up grant (Gründungszuschuss), you need a Expert opinion, an economic report confirming your viability.

Your path to success: We are your shortcut

The path to an approved KfW loan is complex and prone to errors. The likelihood of approval increases significantly if you have an experienced advisor by your side. X-Group is not only specialised in preparing your bank-ready Financial Planning but we are also certified nationwide to issue the expert opinion. We support you throughout the entire process, from concept to disbursement.
