The good news: In Germany, there are a number of funding programmes designed specifically for this purpose. One of the best-known and most popular is the KfW ERP Start-up Loan – previously known as KfW StartGeld. Same content, new name, European funding pool.

In this article, I will show you, using three concrete practical examples, how you can use this programme effectively for your project – whether you are just starting out, already in the market, or planning to move into self-employment alongside your current job.

What is the KfW ERP Start-up Loan?

The KfW ERP Start-up Loan is one of the most flexible funding programmes for founders and young businesses in Germany. It is applied for through your main bank and financed from a European funding pool – the ERP Special Fund (European Recovery Program).

The programme is aimed at founders in the early stages as well as entrepreneurs who have already been in the market for one or two years and want to grow. The maximum funding amount is €200,000 – and this applies both to full-time and part-time self-employment.

Important: You can apply for the loan within the first five years after your business registration– even if you are still employed and initially building your self-employment on the side.

Example 1 – Market entry without major investments: up to €80,000

You do not need machinery, property, or expensive business equipment – you simply want to enter the market? Then you fall into the category of working capital financing.

Typical items in this case include marketing costs for market entry, software and digital tools, initial employees you need to co-finance at the beginning, as well as ongoing operating costs during the start-up phase.

For pure working capital, the KfW ERP Start-up Loan has an upper limit of 80,000 euros. At first glance, this may seem like a restriction – but for many service providers, consultants, online businesses and solo founders, it is more than sufficient to launch professionally.

Tip: The same applies here: Those who contribute 10 to 20% equity significantly increase their chances of approval. Having no equity almost always leads to a rejection.

Example 2 – Growth financing for existing businesses: up to €200,000

Are you already in the market – for example, with an e-commerce shop – and want to grow? The KfW ERP Start-up Loan is also designed for this purpose.

A concrete practical example: You want to expand your warehouse with new product lines. KfW recognises newly introduced product lines as an investment – and supports these with up to 200,000 euros. You do not have to apply for the total amount at once. You can split it into two tranches, for example as follows:

Tranche 1 – in the first year: 60,000 euros for a new product line.

Tranche 2 – in the second or third year: 140,000 euros for two further new product lines.

This allows you to finance your growth step by step and in a planned manner – without taking on all the risk at once.

Please note: Products you already have in your range are considered working capital – not an investment. For these, the lower upper limit of 80,000 euros applies. Only genuinely new product lines that you have not previously offered are recognised as an investment.

Example 3 – Complete new start-up: up to €200,000

Are you starting completely from scratch and want to get going with the full programme straight away? This is also possible – under certain conditions.

For a new start-up with up to 200,000 euros in funding, you mainly need two things:

Sufficient equity capital – at least 10 to 20% of the total financing amount. In higher-risk sectors such as gastronomy, banks like to see a bit more.

A viable business model – your project must demonstrably be set up so that you can make a living from it. This means: your entrepreneur’s salary, taxes, and the capital service for interest and repayment must be fully and plausibly reflected in the financial plan.

Particularly interesting: You do not need to be unemployed or self-employed full-time to apply. Even as a full-time or part-time employee you can start a project and receive support – as long as you intend to switch to full-time self-employment within five years.

Who can apply for the KfW ERP Start-up Loan?

The programme is much more flexible than many think. You are eligible to apply if you are founding a new company (full-time or part-time), you have already founded and are still within the first five years after commercial registration, you are starting a business alongside employment and plan to move into full self-employment, or you are expanding an existing company with new product lines or business areas.

In short: Whether you are a new founder, a part-time entrepreneur, or a growth-oriented business owner – the KfW ERP Start-up Loan offers a suitable solution for almost every stage.

What banks look for during the assessment

The biggest difference between an approved and a rejected application almost always lies in the financial plan. As a founder, you generally do not have an entrepreneurial track record to speak for itself. Instead, your future projections must be convincing.

Specifically, this means: Your financial planning for three to four years must be economically plausible, all costs must be fully included – including interest, repayments, and taxes, your ability to service the loan must be clearly evident, and the entire financial and business plan must function as a cohesive unit – the numerical and written sections must be consistent.

A banker reviewing your application is looking for one clear signal: Can this business reliably repay me – the bank? If your financial plan clearly answers this question with yes, your chances of approval increase significantly.

Conclusion: Flexible, accessible, and up to 200,000 euros – if the plan is right

The KfW ERP Start-up Loan is one of the best tools available to founders in Germany. It can be used flexibly, supports both working capital and investments, and is open to both new founders and growing businesses.

The decisive success factor is not just the idea itself – but a complete, plausible, and bank-ready financial plan that demonstrates your project is viable and that you are able to repay the loan.

This is exactly where we at X-Group have been helping for over 20 years – with bank-optimised business plans and loan applications that convince bankers. And the best part: In many cases, you can have our consulting fees subsidised by 50 to 100%.
